E.C proposing food waste reduction target

A critical milestone, a bit of a disappointment and a fantastic opportunity. That is how we would summarize the European Commission’s recent proposal to reduce food waste by 30% (per capita) by 2030.

A critical milestone as Europe becomes the first region in the world to adopt a legally-binding food waste reduction target. This should generate unprecedented momentum amongst all member states (including those that would not otherwise have acted).

A bit of a disappointment since the 30% target falls short of UN SDG 12.3 which calls for a 50% reduction by 2030.

A fantastic opportunity for Europe’s hospitality and contract catering sectors to show what can be achieved through collective action, using a  that makes data measurement and reporting easier and more accurate.

Food waste remains one of the most pressing challenges of our time – let’s work together to drive it down.
